Faced with limited ministerial oversight and resources in early 2007, the Barossa Region Uniting Churches undertook a ‘Path to Renewal’ to determine future directions.  This led Greenock Uniting Church to make the bold decision to cease Sunday worship services from August 2007.  As one door closed however, another opened, and there was agreement to trial an increased use of the Church building on weekdays instead.

And so a vision developed for a different type of ministry – a community outreach venture incorporating café-style facilities, local art and craft, second-hand books, children’s corner with story time, tourism information, ‘All Sing’ group, and youth bike club, as well as the usual ‘Care & Share’ prayer group and women’s fellowship group.

In February 2008, an appeal was launched in support of this valuable community outreach venture.  Through business sponsorship, community donations, grant funds and volunteer support, the Church building and grounds were transformed within weeks!  And following a Name and Logo Competition, this new and exciting venture was named ‘Connections’.

In a society with increasing pressures on daily living, where relationships are breaking down, ‘Connections’ is helping to build and strengthen community.  It is about connecting with people in their everyday lives, building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging.  It is about providing a sanctuary to shelter from the world awhile.

‘Connections’ is now successfully providing a quality low-cost service to the community, whilst witnessing ‘faith in action’.  This also includes funding a ‘Community Donations’ program acknowledging the valuable work of local community groups and/or initiatives, as well as Uniting Church in Australia mission projects.

Through God’s grace, and the dedication and tireless efforts of a special group of volunteers, ‘Connections’ is making a difference in people’s lives!

“If you have love for one another, then everyone will know

that you are my disciples.” (John 13: 35).
